Research on the species Onthophagus taurus found this pedestal-and-chamber construction gives each larva an isolated food supply and lowers the risk of disease spreading between siblings. A single female may build and provision dozens of brood balls over her lifetime, each with its own egg.

Larval Stage: Three Instars Inside the Ball

The larva hatches inside the brood ball and never leaves it. It feeds first on the pedestal, then alternates between the cellulose-rich dung wall of the ball and its own frass, molting twice as it grows through three larval instars. In Onthophagus taurus, the entire larval period and pupation take place inside that same sealed chamber, with no contact with the outside dung pile until the adult digs its way out. Development speed depends heavily on temperature and on how much dung the mother packed into the ball.

Pupal Stage: Metamorphosis in a Sealed Chamber

Once the larva finishes its third instar, it builds a pupation chamber out of leftover dung and its own fecal matter, then pupates inside it. Metamorphosis reshapes the soft, grub-like larva into a hard-shelled adult with wings, legs, and the characteristic scarab body plan. In O. taurus, the pupa ecloses into an adult after roughly eight days at 25°C, then stays inside the chamber for several more days while its exoskeleton hardens.

Adult Stage: Digging Out and Dispersing

The newly formed adult digs upward through the soil to reach the surface, usually during the same breeding season the egg was laid. Adults locate fresh dung using scent and can travel considerable distances to find it, then feed, mate, and in most species begin building brood balls of their own within weeks. Lifespan varies widely by species, from a few months to a couple of years for some tunneling species.

Mating and Brood Ball Construction

Males of many species fight over females and over access to dung piles, using horns to wedge rivals out of burrow entrances. Some species, including several Onthophagus and Copris species, show a degree of parental care rare among beetles: the female stays with her brood balls for days or weeks, cleaning off fungal growth and defending the chamber from ants and other intruders before she dies or moves on.

Why Dung Beetles Matter to the Ecosystem

Nutrient Cycling

Burying dung moves nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients out of the surface layer where they would otherwise wash away or evaporate, and into the root zone where plants can use them. Pastures with active dung beetle populations show measurably faster manure breakdown than pastures without them.

Soil Structure

Tunneling species dig vertical shafts that can run 30 cm or deeper, loosening compacted soil and creating channels that let water and air reach plant roots faster after rain.

Fly and Parasite Control

Because house flies and horn flies lay their eggs in fresh manure, a dung beetle that buries or rolls away a pile within a day or two removes the fly larvae’s food source and nursery in the same motion. Ranchers use this effect deliberately, since fewer fly breeding sites on pasture means fewer flies biting livestock.
