What Are the Characteristics of Dung Beetles? Size ranges from 2-3 millimeter specialists to fist-sized giants, coloration runs from matte black to metallic green, and behavior splits into three distinct nesting strategies. All of it belongs to the subfamily Scarabaeinae, part of the family Scarabaeidae, which comprises more than 5,000 described species found on every continent except Antarctica.

Where Dung Beetles Fit

Dung beetles occupy grasslands, forests, savannas, and farmland, wherever mammals leave droppings behind. Their main job is disposal: a beetle finds a fresh pile, claims a portion, and either eats it, buries it, or hauls it away.

Why They Matter Ecologically

By burying dung, tunneling and roller species pull nutrients down into the soil and aerate it in the process. Buried dung also removes habitat that flies and other pests would otherwise breed in on the surface, and it keeps pastures from being smothered by waste that would otherwise kill the grass underneath it.

Size Range

Dung beetle size spans from roughly 2 to 3 millimeters in the smallest species to about 7 centimeters (2.8 inches) in the largest members of the genus Heliocopris; most Heliocopris run smaller, closer to 3 to 5 centimeters. Species in this genus are often associated with the dung of elephants, rhinos, or hippos, though individual species also use dung from cattle and other animals rather than specializing exclusively in one source.

Small Species

The smallest dung beetles are built for speed and stealth. Their compact, rounded bodies let them squeeze into dense grass and cracks in dry soil, and they can work a small dropping in numbers before larger competitors show up.

Large Species and Weaponry

Onthophagus taurus, the bull-horned dung beetle, is only 8 to 10 millimeters long, but males that reach a large enough body size grow a pair of curved horns several millimeters long from the base of the head. Those horned "major" males use the horns to fight off rival males guarding the same female; males that stay below the size threshold grow little or no horn and instead sneak around the major males or dig side tunnels to reach females while the guarding males are occupied.

Size as a Survival Strategy

Smaller species tend to specialize in smaller, faster-drying droppings from rodents and birds, since speed matters more than muscle. Larger species are built for big herbivore dung, elephant, rhino, or cattle, where moving and burying a useful portion requires real strength rather than agility.

Color and Surface Pattern

Most dung beetles are matte black or brown, a coloration that hides them against soil and dried dung while they work. A smaller number of species carry a metallic green, blue, copper, or purple sheen instead.

Where the Metallic Color Comes From

The iridescence in species like some Phanaeus and Onthophagus comes from structural coloration: microscopic ridges in the exoskeleton bend light at different angles rather than reflecting it off a pigment. The same beetle can look green from one angle and near-black from another as light hits the cuticle differently.

Color and Mating Displays

In species with visible metallic color, brightness and shine can factor into mate choice the same way horn size does in Onthophagus taurus, giving potential partners a visual cue about condition, in addition to physical contests over burrows and mates.

Behavior: Three Nesting Strategies

Entomologists Ilkka Hanski and Yves Cambefort grouped dung beetles into three functional types based on what each species does with the dung it finds: rollers, tunnelers, and dwellers.

Rollers

Rollers cut a piece off a dung pile, shape it into a ball, and push it away from the pile before burying it at a separate spot. Moving the ball off-site cuts down on competition from other beetles still crowding the original pile. In many roller species a male does the pushing while a female rides along or follows behind, and the pair buries the ball together and mates underground.

Tunnelers

Tunnelers dig straight down beneath or beside the dung pile and drag portions of it into side chambers, where the dung is packed into brood balls, each holding a single egg. Because the food stays close to where it was found, tunnelers spend less energy moving material than rollers do.

Dwellers

Dwellers skip burial altogether and live inside the dung pile itself, feeding, mating, and laying eggs directly in the material as it sits on the surface. Their larvae develop in place as the pile slowly breaks down around them.

Parental Investment

Across all three groups, a buried or shaped dung ball works as both food and shelter for the larva inside it. Some species take this further, with the female staying near the brood ball to guard it from predators and competing beetles until the larva completes development.

Solitary and Aggregated Life

Most dung beetle species are solitary outside of mating, but large or rich dung piles can draw dozens of individuals from different species at once, each claiming and processing its own portion before moving on.

What the Numbers Add Up To

A single dropping can attract beetles ranging from millimeter-scale dwellers to fist-sized rollers, each shaped, colored, and behaviorally wired for a different slice of the same resource. That range in size, color, and nesting strategy is what lets more than 5,000 Scarabaeinae species divide up dung from the tropics to temperate farmland without directly competing with each other.
