How to spot dung beetles in the wild comes down to two things: knowing where livestock or wildlife droppings sit, and checking those spots at dawn or dusk. Dung beetles belong to the family Scarabaeidae, subfamily Scarabaeinae, and worldwide there are thousands of described species, with dozens of species found across the United States. Most of what you’ll notice first is behavior, not color: a beetle rolling a ball across a trail, or a fresh pat that’s already riddled with tunnels an hour after an animal has passed.
What Counts as a Dung Beetle
Not every beetle near manure is a true dung beetle. The Scarabaeinae are the “true” dung feeders, and entomologists split them into three functional groups based on what they do with the dung pat.
Rollers, Tunnelers, and Dwellers
- Rollers: cut a piece from the pat, shape it into a ball, and roll it away in a straight line before burying it to feed or breed.
- Tunnelers: dig straight down under the pat and pack dung into side chambers ranging from just below the surface to well over a foot deep, depending on the species.
- Dwellers: stay inside the pat itself and lay eggs directly in it, without moving or burying anything.
Tunnelers are the group you’ll find most often in North American pastures; rollers are more conspicuous because you can watch them work in the open.

Physical Traits to Check
Once you’ve found a beetle, a few field marks separate dung beetles from other scarabs.
Size
Sizes vary by species, but most US Scarabaeinae are about 1-3/8 inch or less in length. The rainbow scarab (Phanaeus vindex), one of the most recognizable dung beetles in the eastern and central US, is roughly half an inch to an inch long.
Color and Shell
Coloring ranges from flat black to metallic green, blue, or copper, sometimes on the same beetle depending on the angle of light. That iridescence comes from the microstructure of the exoskeleton, not pigment, which is why the color can shift as the beetle moves. Look for a domed, oval body and a thick, convex shell built to shoulder through packed dung and soil.
Legs and Head
The front legs are usually flattened and toothed for digging or cutting into the pat. Rollers tend to have long, slightly curved hind legs adapted for walking backward while pushing a ball. Males of several species, including the rainbow scarab, carry a single curved horn on the head or thorax.
Behavior That Gives Them Away
Dung beetles are usually easier to identify by what they’re doing than by markings alone.
Feeding and Burial
Tunnelers can bury a substantial portion of a fresh pat within a day or two, which is why an older pile often looks perforated with small holes and tunnels rather than intact. Rollers work faster in the open: a beetle may shape and move a ball within minutes of a pat being deposited.
Timing
Most US species are active from late spring through early fall, with the heaviest activity at dawn and dusk when temperatures are moderate. Some species fly during the heat of the day; others, especially larger tunnelers, wait until dark.
Where to Look
Dung beetles follow their food source, so start where large animals graze or pass through regularly.
- Pastures: cattle, horse, or sheep pasture is the most reliable spot in most of the US.
- Deer trails: wooded edges and clearings with deer droppings hold smaller native species.
- Open range and ranchland: larger tracts with consistent livestock traffic support the widest range of species.
- Parks with grazing animals: some urban and suburban parks with deer or managed livestock still attract a handful of species.
Fresh dung, deposited within the last day, draws the most activity. A pat that’s dried out and crusted over has usually already been worked through or abandoned.
Five Ways to Find Them in the Field
1. Check Fresh Pats First
Walk grazing areas or trails and prioritize droppings still soft or glossy. Older, dried pats rarely have active beetles left inside.
2. Time Your Visit
Go out in the hour after sunrise or before sunset. Midday heat pushes many species underground or into shade, so activity drops off in the hottest part of the day.
3. Carry a Regional Field Guide
Genus-level identification (Phanaeus, Onthophagus, Canthon, Geotrupes) is usually possible in the field; species-level ID often needs a hand lens or a specimen.
4. Photograph from Multiple Angles
Shoot the dorsal view, the head/horn area, and the legs. Color can shift with light, so a shot showing the true shell texture helps confirm ID later.
5. Try a Baited Pitfall Trap
A cup buried flush with the ground, baited with a small amount of fresh dung, will pull in beetles from the surrounding area within a few hours. This is standard practice in dung beetle surveys and works well for comparing which species are active in a given pasture.
Handling Dung Beetles Responsibly
- Leave buried brood balls alone: digging up a tunnel to see the larvae kills the developing beetle.
- Release trap catches promptly: don’t hold live beetles in a closed container longer than needed for photos or a quick ID check.
- Log unusual finds: a beetle outside its known range is worth reporting to a state entomology extension office or a citizen-science platform like iNaturalist.
Why the Search Is Worth It
Dung beetle activity is a rough indicator of pasture health. Where beetles bury dung quickly, they reduce cattle internal parasite transmission by removing the manure the parasites need to complete their life cycle, and nitrogen from the manure reaches the soil instead of evaporating off the surface. A field with visibly perforated, fast-disappearing pats usually has an active beetle population; a field where dung sits intact for weeks often doesn’t.
