Damselfly Scientific Name and Taxonomy
The scientific name for the damselfly group is Zygoptera, a suborder within the insect order Odonata. “Damselfly” is not one species, so it has no single two-part scientific name. A particular species needs its own genus and species name, such as Calopteryx maculata for the ebony jewelwing or Enallagma civile for the familiar bluet.
Where Do Damselflies Fit in Classification?
The broad hierarchy is kingdom Animalia, phylum Arthropoda, class Insecta, order Odonata, and suborder Zygoptera. Families, genera, and species sit below that. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lists Zygoptera under Odonata and provides the taxonomic serial number 102042 for the group.
Classification represents relationships, not a list of physical labels. A damselfly remains a zygopteran through its aquatic nymph and winged adult stages.
What Does Zygoptera Mean?
The name comes from Greek roots referring to paired or yoked wings. Damselfly forewings and hind wings are generally similar in shape and narrow near the base. Dragonfly hind wings tend to broaden more strongly at the base.
Wing posture is useful but not absolute. Most damselflies hold their wings together over the abdomen at rest, while spreadwings leave them partly open. Taxonomy does not change because one family breaks a familiar field rule.
What Is Odonata?
Odonata is the order containing damselflies and dragonflies. Members are predators with large compound eyes, two pairs of strongly veined wings as adults, and an extendable lower lip for seizing prey as aquatic nymphs.
The Illinois DNR summarizes the order’s egg, nymph, and adult life cycle. Odonates undergo incomplete metamorphosis, so there is no pupal stage.
Which Families Are Damselflies?
Common North American families include Calopterygidae, the broad-winged jewelwings and rubyspots; Lestidae, the spreadwings; and Coenagrionidae, a large family containing bluets, dancers, forktails, sprites, and related pond damsels. Other families occur in different parts of the world.
Family is a practical first target. Wing shape, resting posture, body build, habitat, and color pattern may place an adult in a family even when a sharp species identification requires close examination.
What Are a Genus and Species?
A genus groups closely related species and supplies the first word of the binomial. The second word identifies one species within that genus. Familiar bluet, Enallagma civile, and New England bluet, Enallagma laterale, share a genus but remain distinct species.
A genus name alone is still useful when evidence stops there. Writing Enallagma sp. honestly reports an unidentified bluet in that genus, while “spp.” refers to more than one species. It is better than forcing a false binomial.
How Are Scientific Names Written?
A species name has two italicized words. The genus begins with a capital letter and the species epithet is lowercase: Calopteryx maculata. After the first full use, the genus can be abbreviated when no confusion is possible: C. maculata.
Zygoptera, Odonata, and family names are capitalized but not normally italicized. Common names are not a substitute for the binomial because the same common word may be used differently between countries.
Why Do Names Change?
Taxonomists revise a classification when anatomical, genetic, developmental, or geographic evidence changes the best explanation of relationships. A species may move to another genus, a broad species may be split, or two named forms may be combined.
That does not make scientific naming arbitrary. A revision should be published with evidence and followed by curated databases and regional authorities. Record the name and reference used at the time of identification.
Can Color Give You a Species Name?
Rarely by itself. Blue males occur in many genera, while females and young adults may have brown, orange, green, or blue forms. Closely related bluets can require a clear view of male terminal appendages or female thoracic plates.
The Maryland DNR recommends using eye and face color plus markings on the thorax and abdomen. Location, date, sex, and habitat narrow the candidate list before tiny structures are compared.
How Do Nymphs Fit the Taxonomy?
A damselfly nymph is the same species as the adult it will become. It has a slender aquatic body and typically three leaflike gills at the abdomen tip. Identification keys use gill shape, mouthparts, setae, and other structures rather than adult wing patterns.
Iowa State Extension explains that these naiads live underwater for months or years before the final molt. Follow that transition in the damselfly life cycle.
