Why Do Locusts Swarm?
Locusts swarm when a species that can change phase becomes crowded after favorable breeding conditions. As numbers rise, solitary insects begin to behave, develop, and move differently, producing marching bands of young locusts and flying swarms of adults. Most grasshoppers do not do this. Swarming is a special response found in a small number of short-horned grasshopper species.
What Makes a Locust Different From a Grasshopper?
Locusts are grasshoppers in the family Acrididae, but the word locust is reserved for species that can respond dramatically to crowding. At low density, a locust may live alone, avoid other individuals, and look much like an ordinary grasshopper. This is the solitary phase.

At high density, the same species can become gregarious. It gathers, moves with others, and may change color, body shape, physiology, and reproductive traits. The Food and Agriculture Organization describes this as phase change. The insect is not transformed into a different species; it is showing a different form of the same species.
What Starts the Crowding?
Good breeding conditions set the stage. Rain can leave soil moist enough for egg laying and can produce fresh vegetation for food and shelter. If several breeding cycles succeed and natural mortality stays low, locust numbers can build in a limited area.
Crowding is not caused by rain alone. It depends on the species, weather, soil moisture, food, and how individuals become concentrated. As conditions dry or vegetation is used up, locusts may be pushed into smaller suitable patches. Frequent contact then helps trigger the gregarious response.
How Do Young Locusts Form Bands?
Newly hatched locusts are called hoppers or nymphs. They have no functional wings, so a gregarious group travels on foot. Large groups are called hopper bands. They can march across the ground in the same general direction while feeding on vegetation.
This synchronized behavior has a practical effect: a dense band can use plants rapidly in one place and then keep moving. Seeing many wingless grasshoppers together is therefore more significant than seeing scattered adults in a field, especially in a region monitored for locust activity.

How Do Adult Swarms Form?
After the final molt, locusts become winged adults. Gregarious adults can gather into swarms that fly and settle together. In the Desert Locust, swarms usually travel by day and are carried by favorable winds. FAO reports travel ranging from a few kilometers to well over one hundred kilometers in a day, depending on conditions.
A swarm is not a fixed cloud that stays over one garden. It is a mobile population responding to weather, vegetation, roosting sites, and breeding opportunities. Its movement is why locust monitoring uses field reports and weather information across wide areas rather than relying on one property alone.
Do All Locusts Change the Same Way?
No. The size of the change and the chance of a damaging swarm differ by species. The Desert Locust, Schistocerca gregaria, is the best-known example because it can form large, mobile swarms. Other locust species may form bands or groups that are smaller, less mobile, or more limited to certain habitats.
Even in one species, phase change is gradual rather than an on-off switch. Some individuals may be in an intermediate state, often called transiens. Color is a clue in some species, but behavior and density are more useful than color alone for judging whether gregarization is taking place.
Why Do Swarms Cause Crop Damage?
Each locust eats plant material, but the damage comes from density and movement. A concentrated band or swarm can strip leaves, shoots, flowers, seeds, and other plant parts from a large area. The same group can then move to another field or pasture.
For Desert Locusts, FAO estimates that an adult eats roughly its own weight in fresh vegetation each day. That estimate explains why outbreaks threaten crops and grazing even though a single locust is small. The issue is a coordinated mass of feeders, not an insect attacking people.
What Is the Simple Answer?
Locusts swarm because crowding changes the behavior of certain grasshopper species. Favorable breeding can raise local numbers, crowding promotes a gregarious phase, wingless young form bands, and adults can form flying swarms.
