Mosquito Life Cycle: Egg, Larva, Pupa, and Adult
A mosquito develops through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The immature stages are tied to water, while the adult is a flying insect. In warm conditions, some container mosquitoes can go from egg to adult in roughly 7 to 10 days, but species, temperature, food, crowding, and water conditions can stretch the full cycle from days to weeks or longer. Controlling water interrupts several stages at once.
Where Do Mosquitoes Lay Eggs?
Egg placement differs among genera. Culex females usually place eggs directly on fresh or stagnant water in floating rafts. Anopheles females lay separate floating eggs on water. Many Aedes place individual eggs on a damp container wall above the current waterline.

This difference changes control. Emptying water removes many floating eggs, but Aedes eggs can remain stuck to the wall and hatch when later rain covers them. Scrubbing the container breaks that cycle.
How Long Can Eggs Survive?
Some eggs hatch soon after they are laid, while others wait for flooding or suitable conditions. CDC reports that eggs of Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus can survive drying for up to eight months on container walls.
Not every genus tolerates drought that well. Anopheles eggs laid on water do not withstand prolonged drying. A general statement that all mosquito eggs survive a dry winter is therefore false.

What Do Mosquito Larvae Look Like?
Larvae are narrow aquatic insects with a distinct head and a segmented, flexible body. They jerk or wriggle when disturbed, which gives them the nickname wigglers. Many hang from the surface through a breathing siphon, while Anopheles larvae lie nearly parallel to the surface.
Most filter or gather microorganisms and fine organic material from the water. They molt four times, passing through four larval instars. Growth rate depends strongly on temperature, food, density, and species.
How Do Larvae Breathe?
Most mosquito larvae return to the surface for air. A breathing siphon or abdominal spiracles connect with the atmosphere. Some specialized species pierce aquatic plants to obtain oxygen, so they may be less visible at the surface.
Moving or draining water can make a small artificial container unsuitable, but do not assume every natural wetland should be altered. Home control focuses first on manufactured containers and correctable drainage.

What Happens in the Pupal Stage?
The comma-shaped pupa lives in water, breathes at the surface, and tumbles when disturbed. It does not feed. Inside, the larval body completes its transformation into a winged adult.
Pupal development can be brief in warm conditions. The mature pupa rises, the case splits, and the adult balances on the surface while pulling free. Waves, oil, or disturbance at this vulnerable moment can prevent successful emergence.
What Happens After Emergence?
The new adult rests while its outer covering and wings harden. Males often emerge before females in a local cohort and form mating groups. Both sexes seek plant sugars for energy.
Only females bite people or animals. In most familiar species, a female takes a blood meal to develop eggs, rests while digestion and egg maturation proceed, then finds a suitable laying site. The cycle can repeat more than once during her life.
How Fast Is the Full Life Cycle?
EPA says the full cycle is commonly up to about two weeks and can range from roughly four days to a month under different conditions. CDC gives about 7 to 10 days from egg to adult for Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus in suitable conditions.
These figures are not a countdown for every container. Cool water, scarce food, crowding, species biology, and seasonal dormancy can slow development. Conversely, warm nutrient-rich water can produce adults quickly.
Which Stage Spreads Disease?
Only the adult female can transmit mosquito-borne germs through a bite. Eggs, larvae, and pupae do not bite and do not fly between hosts. Larval control still reduces future adult females before they disperse.
A newly emerged female is not automatically infectious. For transmission, a compatible mosquito must acquire a germ from an infected host, the germ must develop or multiply inside it, and later reach the salivary glands.
Which Stage Is Easiest to Control?
Eggs and larvae are concentrated in water, so habitat removal is often more efficient than chasing adults. Empty and scrub containers weekly, cover stored water, clear drainage, and treat unavoidable water only with a larvicide labeled for that site.
