Some active ingredients and applications are restricted to trained mosquito-control personnel. A product being used by a district in a marsh or catch basin does not mean the same use is available to a homeowner.
Should You Add Oil or Soap to Water?
No homemade surface treatment should be added to outdoor water. Cooking oil, dish soap, bleach, fuel, and other household chemicals can harm aquatic insects, amphibians, birds, pets, plants, water quality, or the container itself. Their dose and environmental fate are not controlled.
Registered monomolecular films and oils used by professionals are pesticide formulations with specific labels. They are not equivalent to pouring a household liquid onto a pond or rain barrel.
How Do You Protect Pollinators and Wildlife?
Remove artificial breeding water first and treat only confirmed, unavoidable habitat. Avoid spilling granules onto flowers or dry ground unless the label directs that application. Store leftovers where children, pets, and wildlife cannot reach them.
