Dung Beetle Identification and Scientific Classification
A dung beetle is usually a compact, oval scarab with a fan-tipped antennal club and broad front legs made for digging. Finding it on or beneath mammal dung is a strong clue, but color and horns alone are not enough. Most dung beetles in US field guides belong to the family Scarabaeidae, especially the subfamilies Scarabaeinae and Aphodiinae, within the beetle order Coleoptera. Earth-boring dung beetles belong to a separate family called Geotrupidae.
The Best Identification Clues
Start with the scarab body plan. NC State University identifies scarabs by their lamellate antennae, spiny legs with five-segmented feet, and oval build. Lamellate sounds technical, but the feature is easy to understand: the last antennal segments are flat plates that close into a club or spread like a small fan.

- Antennae: short clubs ending in leaflike plates that can fan open.
- Front legs: broad tibiae with teeth or a scalloped outer edge for digging.
- Body: commonly stout and oval, with hard wing covers meeting down the back.
- Location: fresh dung, the soil below it, or a dung ball being moved away.
Horns can help with some males, but many dung beetles have none. Color is even less dependable. A specimen may be dull black, reddish brown, or bright metallic green and copper. The antennal club and digging legs tell you more.

The stable high-level path in the NCBI Taxonomy lineage places dung beetles here:

Below the superfamily, the name splits. Within Scarabaeidae, Scarabaeinae contains the true dung beetles, including many of the rollers and tunnelers people picture when they hear “dung beetle.” Aphodiinae contains numerous small dung beetles that live and breed in or just beneath a dung pat. Geotrupidae holds the earth-boring dung beetles, which are members of Scarabaeoidea but not Scarabaeidae.
Why Isn’t Dung Beetle One Taxonomic Group?
“Dung beetle” describes a way of making a living. It does not name one genus, species, or even one family. The Natural History Museum groups dung-feeding members of Scarabaeinae, Aphodiinae, and Geotrupidae under the common name. They share an interest in animal waste, but they did not all come from one narrow taxonomic branch.
The fine print changes as researchers compare more species and more DNA. A large molecular classification study of Scarabaeinae revised several tribes and left some genera without a firm tribal placement. That does not upset the order and superfamily listed above. It does mean an older field guide may place a genus in a different tribe from a newer scientific paper.
Dung Beetles That Look Nothing Alike
The common body plan allows plenty of variation. Many US species are small, dark beetles that would disappear against soil. Rainbow scarabs in the genus Phanaeus can shine green and copper. Males of some Onthophagus species carry large horns while females of the same species have only a bump or ridge.
Size varies just as widely. The Missouri field guide describes local species reaching about three-quarters of an inch, while Cornell’s pasture guide includes species only 3 to 5 millimeters long. A small brown beetle and a horned metallic one can both be legitimate dung beetles.
Lookalikes in a Dung Pat
Location helps, but a beetle found in manure is not automatically a dung beetle. A dung pat is a crowded food web. Some beetles eat the dung; others hunt the fly eggs, maggots, and smaller insects attracted to it.
Cornell’s pasture beetle guide shows several common impostors. Hister beetles often tuck a small head beneath the pronotum and leave the last abdominal segments exposed beyond shortened wing covers. Rove beetles have a longer, flexible body with very short wing covers. Sphaeridium beetles can look smooth and oval, but their larvae prey on fly maggots. The antennal fan is the best quick separator from these neighbors.
How Close Can You Get at Home?
Family or subfamily is often realistic with a hand lens. Species can be another matter. Useful records include the state, habitat, body length in millimeters, leg shape, and whether the antennal plates open into a fan. At closer range, an identification key may ask about grooves on the wing covers, pits on the pronotum, the small triangular scutellum between the wing covers, or structures on the underside.
A single photo from above may hide the feature that settles the name. Take a side view too, and do not force a species label when the evidence only supports “scarab” or “dung beetle.” For a practical field sequence, use the guide to identify dung beetles and stop at the level the visible details justify.
Are Dung Beetles Harmful?
They are allies in a yard, pasture, or wild habitat. Dung beetles break up animal waste, carry some of it underground, and return nutrients to the soil. The Missouri Department of Conservation also notes that cleaning manure reduces habitat for pest flies.
I would leave a suspected dung beetle alone unless an expert finds a different pest hiding behind the name. The beetle’s odd meal is doing useful cleanup, and identification is a better first move than spraying a dark beetle on sight.
