Dragonfly Facts: Flight, Eyes, Nymphs, and Hunting

Dragonflies are predatory insects in order Odonata, with four powerful wings, enormous compound eyes, six spiny legs, and an aquatic juvenile stage. Adults intercept prey in the air, while nymphs hunt underwater with a fast hinged lower lip. Their life joins freshwater habitat to the aerial food web, which is why a dragonfly is more than a fast mosquito eater.

How Do Dragonflies Fly?

A dragonfly has two pairs of membranous wings attached to a strong thorax. It can alter the timing and angle of each pair, allowing sharp turns, hovering, gliding, acceleration, and backward movement that few other insects match.

UF/IFAS reports speeds up to about 30 miles per hour. Speed varies by species and situation, while agility is often the more useful hunting advantage. Adults can adjust course as a moving prey insect changes direction.

How Good Is Dragonfly Vision?

The paired compound eyes cover much of the head and create a very wide field of view. Each eye contains thousands of light-sensing units called ommatidia; NC State notes that some dragonflies may have up to about 28,000 facets.

Different eye regions vary in resolution and spectral sensitivity. The system is especially effective at detecting motion and tracking small targets against the sky or vegetation.

How Do Adults Catch Prey?

A dragonfly tracks an insect, approaches on an intercept course, and sweeps it into a basket formed by six forward-directed, spiny legs. The mouth then bites and chews the catch. Some prey is eaten in flight and some after landing.

Dragonflies take mosquitoes, midges, flies, moths, small bees, and other insects they can overpower. Large species may capture smaller dragonflies. They are general predators rather than specialists assigned to one pest.

What Do Dragonfly Nymphs Look Like?

Nymphs are wingless, aquatic, and generally stockier than damselfly nymphs. They have six legs, a large head, developing wing pads in later stages, and no three leaf-like external tail gills.

Color and body shape match bottom sediment, vegetation, or burrowing habitat. Species identification often depends on the shape of the labium, antennae, abdomen, and other small structures.

How Do Nymphs Hunt?

The lower lip, called the labium, folds under the head and shoots forward to seize prey. Nymphs take aquatic insects, mosquito larvae, crustaceans, tadpoles, and sometimes small fish, with prey size depending on the dragonfly.

Some stalk through plants, some wait buried in sediment, and others crawl over the bottom. They are also prey for fish, frogs, birds, and larger aquatic insects.

Can a Nymph Jet Through Water?

Dragonfly nymphs draw water into a rectal chamber for gas exchange. By forcefully expelling that water, they can propel themselves forward in a short escape burst. The same internal chamber therefore contributes to breathing and emergency movement.

This jet does not continue into the adult stage. After emergence, four wings take over movement and the abandoned nymphal skin remains attached to the support.

How Do Dragonflies Grow?

They undergo incomplete metamorphosis: egg, a series of aquatic nymphal stages, and adult. There is no pupal stage. The mature nymph climbs from water, its skin splits, and a soft adult pulls free.

The adult expands its body and wings, then waits for them to harden before first flight. This vulnerable process can take hours and requires an undisturbed stem, rock, log, or bank.

Do Dragonflies Migrate?

Some species migrate and others remain near suitable local habitat. The common green darner is a well-known North American migrant, and Florida receives seasonal movements while also supporting resident populations throughout the year.

Migration timing follows species, generation, weather, and geography. A large moving swarm can be travel, feeding around a prey concentration, or both, so behavior and direction matter.

Why Are Dragonflies Useful?

Adults and nymphs consume many insects, including mosquitoes at both aquatic and flying stages. They also feed fish, birds, frogs, and other wildlife. Their presence reflects suitable habitat, though individual species tolerate different water conditions.
