Do Paper Wasps Sting?
Yes. Female paper wasps can sting, usually when they defend a nest, are trapped against skin, or are handled. Unlike a honey bee, a paper wasp can withdraw its smooth stinger and sting more than once. Most stings cause sharp pain, redness, and local swelling, but venom allergy can cause life-threatening anaphylaxis. Trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or widespread symptoms requires emergency care.
Why Do Paper Wasps Sting?
The stinger is a modified egg-laying structure, so females sting and males do not. Workers use it mainly to defend their colony. A wasp feeding on nectar or hunting a caterpillar away from the nest has less reason to confront a person.
Risk rises when a hand, mower, ladder, vibration, or sudden movement approaches the comb. A wasp caught in clothing may also sting while trying to escape. Deliberate swatting can turn a passing encounter into contact.
Can a Paper Wasp Sting More Than Once?
Yes. Paper wasps, yellowjackets, hornets, and bumble bees generally pull their stingers free and can sting again. A honey bee worker often leaves a barbed stinger and attached venom apparatus in mammal skin.
A paper wasp normally leaves no stinger behind. Do not delay first aid while searching for one, but look briefly because a different insect may have caused the sting.
What Does a Normal Sting Reaction Look Like?
A mild reaction includes immediate burning or sharp pain, a raised welt, redness, itching, and swelling around the site. Symptoms often ease over hours. A larger local reaction may expand over the next day or two and last several days.
Reaction size does not identify the wasp species. Photograph the area, note the time, and monitor change. A clinician can distinguish a large local allergic response from infection or another injury more reliably than an online photo.
What Should You Do After a Sting?
Move away from the nest area first so more stings do not occur. Wash the site with soap and water and apply a wrapped cold pack to reduce pain and swelling. Avoid scratching because broken skin can become infected.
Ask a pharmacist or clinician about pain or itch medicine that fits the person’s age, pregnancy status, medical conditions, and current medicines. Do not cut the site, squeeze it, apply fuel or bleach, or use another caustic home treatment.
What Are the Signs of Anaphylaxis?
Warning signs can include trouble breathing, wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, trouble swallowing, widespread hives, dizziness, faintness, abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, or a rapid fall in blood pressure. Symptoms can progress quickly and may involve more than one body system.
Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency. Use prescribed epinephrine immediately according to the person’s action plan, then call emergency services. Epinephrine does not replace evaluation in an emergency department.
When Else Is Medical Care Needed?
Seek urgent advice for a sting inside the mouth or throat, many stings, eye involvement, worsening swelling, severe pain, vomiting, fever, confusion, breathing symptoms, or signs of infection. Children, older adults, and people with heart or breathing disease can be at greater risk from multiple stings.
A person with a previous systemic sting reaction should follow their emergency plan and discuss testing and venom immunotherapy with an allergist. Allergy to one stinging insect does not automatically define the response to every bee or wasp venom.
How Do You Avoid Paper Wasp Stings?
Inspect eaves, railings, sheds, play equipment, grills, and outdoor boxes before working around them. Give an open comb a wide route and keep children and pets away. Do not stand under it or block the wasps’ approach.
Wear shoes and work gloves for outdoor tasks, check cans before drinking, and move calmly when one wasp investigates. If several attack, cover your face and move quickly indoors or into a closed vehicle.
Should You Remove Every Paper Wasp Nest?
No. A nest far from routine activity can often remain until the colony dies in cold weather. Paper wasps hunt caterpillars and other insects, and adults visit flowers. Unnecessary treatment removes those functions and creates approach risk.
A nest beside a door, walkway, play area, work station, or allergic resident deserves professional assessment. Do not attempt removal if escape is difficult or the comb is hidden in a structure.
How Can You Confirm It Is a Paper Wasp?
Paper wasps are slender, long-legged wasps that build a single exposed comb without an outer paper envelope. European paper wasps can be black and yellow enough to resemble yellowjackets, so color alone is weak evidence.
Nest form, body proportions, and flight posture provide better clues. Compare them with the field guide to identifying paper wasps while staying outside the colony’s defensive space.
