Do Bumblebees Live in Hives? Colony Structure Explained
Bumblebees live in social colonies, but their home is better called a nest than a hive. Most temperate species occupy a pre-existing cavity for one season, and the colony consists of a queen, female workers, males, and eventually new queens. Unlike a honey-bee colony, the whole group does not remain together through winter.
What Is the Difference Between a Nest and a Hive?
People often use hive for any place where social bees live. In beekeeping, however, a hive usually means the structure housing a honey-bee colony, such as a wooden box. Bumblebees are wild bees that usually choose their own cavities, so nest is the clearer term.
The distinction also prevents a false picture of neat vertical combs filled with thousands of bees. A bumblebee nest is smaller, less orderly to human eyes, and built for a single annual cycle.
Where Does a Colony Build Its Nest?
Many species nest underground in abandoned rodent burrows. Others use dense grass, spaces under sheds, birdhouses, wall cavities, insulation, compost areas, or sheltered containers. The queen looks for an existing hollow rather than excavating an elaborate tunnel system herself.
Preferences vary by species. A cavity must offer shelter, enough room for growth, and an entrance workers can learn. The nest can be close to people without being visible until repeated bee traffic reveals the opening.
Who Starts the Colony?
One mated queen emerges from winter diapause, feeds, and searches for a nest site. She gathers pollen and nectar, forms the first brood cells, lays eggs, and warms and feeds the developing larvae alone.
The first adult daughters become workers. Their arrival changes the queen’s role. Workers take over most foraging, brood care, nest maintenance, temperature control, and defense while the queen concentrates on egg laying.

What Is Inside a Bumblebee Nest?
The interior contains wax brood cells, larval cocoons, and pot-like vessels holding nectar or pollen. The arrangement is clustered and irregular rather than a flat sheet of six-sided honeycomb. Plant fibers, dry grass, fur, or old nesting material may surround it.
Stored food supports the queen and brood during poor weather, but bumblebees do not build the large winter honey reserve associated with honey bees. Their annual strategy does not require feeding a full worker population for months of cold.
Why Don’t Bumblebees Store Winter Honey?
The colony is not organized to overwinter as a group. It stores enough nectar and pollen to feed current adults and developing brood through short gaps in foraging, but the old queen and workers die at the end of the season.
A newly mated queen survives elsewhere on reserves held in her own body. She emerges in spring and starts fresh, so there is no winter workforce inside the old nest that needs a large sealed food supply.
How Large Does a Colony Get?
Colony size depends on species, nest success, season, and resources. Some mature colonies contain only a few dozen workers, while larger species may reach several hundred. Penn State reports that common eastern bumblebee colonies can contain roughly 100 to 200 workers.
That is far below the tens of thousands possible in a honey-bee colony. Even so, traffic at a narrow entrance can look intense because the same workers make repeated trips throughout the day.
What Happens at the End of the Season?
A mature colony changes from producing workers to producing males and new queens. Males leave and do not return. New queens mate, feed heavily, and locate separate overwintering chambers.
The old queen, workers, and males die as the season ends. The old nest is abandoned, and each surviving young queen begins alone the next spring. She does not lead the old colony back into the same home.
Should You Remove a Bumblebee Nest?
Usually not. If the entrance is away from essential paths, mark the area, keep pets back, and let the colony complete its season. Do not plug the hole, flood it, or spray it. Those actions can provoke defense and may force bees toward another exit.
