Are Locusts Dangerous to People?
Locusts are not dangerous to people in the way stinging, biting, or disease-carrying insects can be. They do not attack humans or animals, and the Food and Agriculture Organization says there is no evidence that they carry diseases harmful to people. Their real danger is to vegetation: a dense band or swarm can consume crops, pasture, and wild plants quickly.
Do Locusts Bite or Sting?
Locusts have chewing mouthparts for plants, not a stinger or a blood-feeding mouthpart. They do not seek people as food, and they do not defend a nest because locusts do not build nests or live in a colony like bees, wasps, or ants.
A locust caught in a hand can kick, scratch lightly with a hind leg, or make a brief defensive nibble. That is not the same as an attack, a venomous bite, or a sting. Leave insects alone rather than handling a mass of them, especially where control work is under way.
Can Locusts Spread Disease?

Are Locusts Dangerous to Pets or Livestock?
Locusts do not prey on pets or livestock. A dog, chicken, or wild bird may eat one, and the insect itself is not attacking the animal. The wider concern in an outbreak is reduced forage for livestock and possible exposure where pesticides are being applied as part of authorized control operations.
Do not let animals into recently treated areas unless local officials say it is safe. Control campaigns use products and procedures selected for the situation, and FAO guidance discusses environmental and health precautions. That risk comes from management chemicals, not a locust pursuing an animal.
Should You Worry About Locust Control?
Large outbreaks are handled by trained plant-protection teams because timing, species identification, weather, and protected areas all matter. The goal is often to find bands or early populations before they become broad adult swarms. Spraying at random can harm beneficial insects and does not replace organized monitoring.
If you live in an affected area, use official local notices for advice about crops, water, livestock, and treated land. If you simply encounter a few grasshopper-like insects, no emergency action is needed. Observation from a distance is enough.
